Recently I formalized my role within at the hospital system where I work. I asked a couple friends about their official job descriptions, and they really didn't have one. So, I ended up finding some good descriptions on the AMDIS site (http://www.amdis.org/opportunity.htm) and morphed them into newly accepted description which is below.

Medical Director of Emergency Informatics and IT Operations

Time Requirements:
5 hours per week, or 8% time
Position Description, each within the scope of Emergency Medicine:
Provides physician leadership involving technology evaluations, selections, and implementations.
Actively participates in ED related IT advisory and implementation committee meetings.
Collaborates with IT areas to promote technology solutions and develop communication plans for the department.
Engages physicians to contribute to the development and use of the clinical information system.
Reviews medical informatics trends, experiences, and approaches, develops technical and application implementation strategies and assists in the development of strategic plans for clinical information systems.
Works in concert with Information Technology to design and implement systems supporting patient care in a teaching and research environment.
Designs workflows that integrate with technology and drives consistency and standardization.
Develops of clinical rules supporting patient care as well as design of clinical system features and use of the system to leverage the clinicians time and maximize communication with affiliates and referring physicians.
Designs and evaluates collection of data for clinical, teaching and research purposes.
Proactively identifies potential issues, provides options for resolution, and communicates with the physician community.
Works effectively with software vendors and consultants during design, implementation, and support activities.
Promotes excellent service.
Researches and develops options for supporting technologies.
Contributes to complete and thorough IT project documentation.
Participates in government and standards bodies as necessary to support department interests
Works in partnership with leadership to advocate innovative technologies in support of safety, quality, and effective patient care.
Reporting Relationship:
The Medical Director of Emergency Informatics and IT Operations will report to the Chair of Emergency Medicine.
